In 1834, the British government passed the Emancipation Act which gave legal freedom to hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans throughout the British Empire, including Canada. This Act was not entirely a result of British beneficence. It was also impelled by the numerous slave revolts in the colonies, and significantly the conclusion of the Haitian Revolution in 1804. Within the current context of the global revolt for justice and freedom, it is imperative on the 187th anniversary of the British Emancipation Act, that we ask: Did the Act give Black people full liberation and freedom? And what have we achieved since 1834.
